Eugene L. considers himself a full-time traveler. He’s been exploring the world for about 50 years—and he recently booked his 50th tour with Go Ahead! Since his first trip with us to Sicily ten years ago, he’s crossed the globe, trekking from South America to Scandinavia, and Thailand to Tanzania. Each year he creates a timeline, maps out all of the places on his wish list, then chooses a tour for each month. When Eugene isn’t on a trip—or carefully planning his next ones—he loves trying wines, visiting local fairs and exploring his hometown of San Francisco.
What do you love about traveling?
It’s fun to get out there. I enjoy seeing new things, trying different food and drink, meeting different people and just watching things go by. I like being at home, but I like being out on the road, too. You’ve just got to assume that there’s plenty new to learn. Other people on tour are also curious and happy to try new things like me. It’s nice to occasionally run into someone whom I’ve traveled with before—we usually share information so we can figure out new places to go.
What do you like about traveling with us?
My first tour with Go Ahead was to Sicily ten years ago and it was great. I realized that your tours really fit my style and my way of doing things. It’s convenient how I can combine airfare with my tour so I don’t have to think about it separately. I also like the choices I have for adding optional excursions or spending free time on my own. You do change and listen to feedback to improve your tours—I like that because I’m always looking for new ways of doing things.
What are some of your favorite places to visit?
Turkey is my favorite destination of all. I like to return there every seven to ten years to see what’s changed since my last visit. I loved visiting Chile and Canada, too. And of course the United States! You can keep finding places that you’ve passed or flown over and think, “How did I miss this?”
Do you have a favorite Go Ahead tour?
Tuscany Walking Tour was so neat. The views, all of the places we walked through…everything! The Tuscany region of Italy is wonderful—the food and people are great, and seeing it all while we zig-zagged through cities on foot was pretty spectacular. When you’re a traveler on a tour, you’re not traveling alone. We’re all experiencing things together!
Eugene reserved his 50th tour with us during our 50th anniversary year. As a special thanks for his loyalty, he’ll be traveling on our Food & Wine: France through Bordeaux & the Loire Valley tour for free!
