As part of our 50th anniversary, we’ve been granting travel wishes all year long. In July, we celebrated the spirit of curiosity by asking travelers about the country they were curious to explore next. Sharon was the lucky winner of July’s contest, with her touching response about wanting to visit Scandinavia in memory of her father.
“I was really in shock when I won, I didn’t expect that when I entered,” Sharon explained. “Traveling was really loved in my family. As a family it’s always been a big part of our lives.”
Sharon’s entry paid tribute to her dad’s memory, who traveled a lot as an international economist before his passing a few years ago. “He went all over,” Sharon said, “but I remember him going to Oslo, going out to the fjords—he loved the outdoors and hiking. He loved it there.”
While Sharon’s family traveled a lot when she was younger—her mother’s family still lives in Ireland—Norway and Scandinavia are two places she’s yet to visit. “I’ve seen all the travel shows, I love the nature and landscapes, being in the coastal areas. From what I’ve seen, Norway looks to be the most beautiful.”
Aside from her father’s love for Scandinavian culture, it’s something Sharon was always surrounded with growing up. “We had Scandinavian furniture all throughout our house,” she said, laughing. “It was modern for the 60s and 70s, but Scandinavian design—lots of angular wooden legs, crazy lamps and couches in turquoise, bright green, a shag carpet. When my mom moved, I made her keep it! She’s held on to all of it.”
For someone who has always known the importance of traveling, Sharon is excited for her free trip and ready to see what else is out there. “It’s hard to narrow it down to one thing,” she said when asked about her favorite part of traveling. “But I think it’s the discovery. Being in a completely different landscape and feeling like you’re in a whole different world, seeing the ways in which people live. That’s what it’s all about.”
Congratulations, Sharon, from all of us at Go Ahead!
