We got to Perugia early Sunday evening to find huge crowds taking in the world famous chocolate festival. We could smell the scent of chocolate from our hotel at the bottom of the long hill!
It was great fun to climb up to the festival and take in the festivities, and of course, sample some of the world-famous chocolate that was being passed out. Wow! What a wonderful place to be on a beautiful October evening in Italy. We are so lucky to have been able to smell, taste and witness such an important time!
We began our next day with an excellent tour from a local guide who explained the history of ancient Perugia and pointed out the famous Etruscan walls and battlements from before the birth of Christ. This place is a living museum and it is worth taking a walk around with a map that points out all of the ancient buildings and architecture… imagine walking on top of an ancient Roman viaduct or climbing the tall towers to take in the beautiful views.
We stopped for a super lunch of pizza with more chocolate treats for dessert. Oh, the chocolate! I have never tasted or smelled such a place before.
If you ever come here, make sure it is this week in October so that you can enjoy Perugia, the ancient city, the countryside that surrounds it and the best chocolate experience you will ever have!
