There’s something about celebrating the new year that we always find exciting. We love the opportunity to reflect on the best moments from the previous year, and it’s the perfect time to set our goals for the months ahead—especially when it comes to our ambitious travel plans. For 2016, we’re dedicated to making the most of our adventures and going further than we’ve been before. Want to join us? Here’s how you can make 2016 your best travel year yet.
Create a travel mood board
One (or many) destinations on your wish list? Keep them top of mind by pinning your favorite travel photos, notes and blog posts to a bulletin board in a prime viewing spot. Being able to visualize where you want to go every time you walk by will help keep you focused when it comes to saving and planning for your trip. Prefer to pin digitally? Make a new friend
Meeting the locals while traveling is a great way to experience a new culture and feel a stronger connection to a destination. Commit to finding a local haunt and introducing yourself to someone. Learn a few key phrases if you’re visiting a country where a different language is used and practice your speaking. Traveling solo? Join a group tour where you’ll be able to meet other travelers who share the same interests as you. Be friendly and open to those you meet, even if you don’t speak the language. There’s a good chance you’ll make a new friend or enlist a new travel buddy for future journeys.
Step outside your comfort zone
Make this the year you try something new. Have you always wanted to ride in a hot air balloon? Scared of ziplining but willing to give it a shot? Want to try your hand at speaking the local language? Resolve to say yes to new experiences and keep an open mind as you do so—you never know what you’ll uncover when you go outside of your comfort zone.
Start a journal
Whether it’s pieces of paper stapled together or a 100-page scrapbook, a journal is a great way to savor your travel moments of 2016. Chronicle your experiences, from the moment you start imagining your trip to how you’re feeling after you return home, and you’ll get to see how your perspective has changed while ensuring that no memory is forgotten.
Revisit a destination
Instead of going somewhere completely new, consider revisiting a favorite destination. Vow to revisit some of your favorite memories while also creating new ones. Or, set out to explore your own backyard and aim to see locations near where you live in a whole new light.
