With a whole operations team on the ground and across the globe, we like to stay on top of the next big thing in travel. Here, our four top picks for what we think will be trending in the travel industry throughout the next year.
New and undiscovered locations
More and more people are getting the opportunity to travel—which means less-explored destinations outside Europe are gaining traction as popular getaway hotspots. Nicaragua, Bruges and Norway’s fjord region are just the start of our travel wish list for next year—you can see our full list of picks here!
Travel and technology
As the number of global data plans and Wi-Fi connectivity increases, so does the use of smartphones and tablets throughout the traveling process. Photo-sharing apps like Instagram offer a constant stream of travel inspiration on the go, while ever-improving phone cameras mean that users are creating spectacular images every day, and that they’re being captured on mobile technology. Try searching for hashtags such as #travel and #travelgram (or #goaheadtours!) to see inspiring images from all over the world, or create an Instagram account to start sharing your own. Mobile technology is also becoming an important part of the trip-planning process, letting users do things like track flights, create packing lists and manage itineraries before (and during) a trip—Go Ahead travelers with iPhones can do all three on our Tour Companion app.
With so many destinations now available to us as travelers, the opportunity for making the experience unique is even bigger, and people are taking advantage. Customized tours are growing in popularity, while the ability to add optional excursions and extensions to a tour allows travelers to tailor a trip to particular preferences or interests. Whether you want to stay longer in your favorite city or are interested in art and art history, customizing tours means a whole new way to see a destination.
Travelers are demanding more from their time away—they don’t want to just see the world, they want to experience it. Getting up close and personal with local culture or trying an adrenaline-filled adventure are becoming the norm, and we’re seeing travelers looking for tours and experiences that allow them to do that. Flying in a hot air balloon over Ayers Rock? Crafting a traditional Italian dish in a Florence cooking class? Interacting with the Masai Mara tribe in Kenya? The options are endless when it comes to getting even more out of your trip.
