London, Paris & Rome
Visiting London, Paris and Rome is a dream for any traveler, and it’s a favorite for families traveling together. With so many iconic sites on tour, amazing excursions and free time to explore each city, it’s no wonder that it’s at the top of our list. Here are just a few of our favorite things to do with your family while you’re traveling.
See the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace
The changing of the guard ceremony is held right outside Buckingham Palace, starting at 11:30am. It happens daily from April to July, and alternate days from August to March. The New Guard arrives to relieve the Old Guard, or soldiers currently on duty, in a procession with plenty of pomp. The Queen’s Guard is an institution with almost 600 years of history—and it’s quite a sight to see.
Visit Versailles Palace & Gardens on an excursion
A UNESCO World Heritage site for more than 30 years, Versailles was once home to the infamous French royals, Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. The opulent palace is a marvel of Baroque architecture, and within its walls lies a wealth of intriguing history. From strolling the Hall of Mirrors to exploring the ornate gardens, a visit to Versailles delights travelers of all ages.
Explore the Colosseum
There’s perhaps no more iconic site in Rome than the Colosseum. The ancient amphitheater was host to everything from gladiatorial contests to classical plays, and the 2,000-year-old building’s history comes to life the moment you step inside. Walking in the footsteps of the ancient Romans is an awesome experience, especially when it’s shared.
The Greek Islands
Stunning Mediterranean coasts, ancient architecture and lively culture—The Greek Islands tour has it all. With plenty of free time to relax and explore Mykonos, Santorini and Crete, and excursions that get you closer to Greek life and history, this trip lets you and your family choose the perfect way to travel together.
Visiting sites populated with Greek mythology is one of our favorite travel experiences to share with family. Younger readers might recognize famous characters like the Minotaur and Zeus, and they truly come to life when you wander among ancient temples and ruins. Share a few Greek myths with your family before you depart as a way to get everyone excited about the trip and ready to engage with the region’s fascinating culture.
A City Stay Experience
As a Go Ahead Senior Customer Service Representative and avid traveler, Nicole has plenty of expert advice for families exploring the world together. Her top suggestion? A City Stay tour, where travelers can live like a local in one sought-after destination. “I took my family on Rome: The City Experience and we loved it,” she said. “A City Stay tour gives you the chance to go at your own pace, have a guide’s expertise when you need it and provides you with plenty of time to explore on your own.”
Excursions offered on Rome: The City Experience take you to Florence, Pompeii and more, giving you a chance to wander outside the city while you’re on tour—but there’s plenty to do in Rome if your family wants to spend free time together. Whether you’re window-shopping along the Via Conditti, admiring ancient art at the Palazzo Massimo or relaxing in the beautiful Boboli Gardens, Rome is the perfect city to explore together.
