South Africa is known as the Rainbow Nation, and when you visit, you’ll be treated to kaleidoscopic delights from sea to sky. Here are our favorite reasons for visiting South Africa on a Go Ahead tour.

1. Game Drives

Game drives on South Africa Discovery visit the rhinos of Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, the crowded watering holes of the Pumba Private Game Reserve, and the famous lions of Kruger National Park. Specially designed all-terrain vehicles allow you to get right up close to exotic animals and breathe in the African air.

2. Eco-cruise at St. Lucia Estuary

The St. Lucia Estuary is home to an incredible array of biodiversity, with habitats including coral reefs, savannas, mangrove swamps and rare and delicate subtropical dune forests. An eco-cruise through this national park will open your eyes to a unique natural world.

3. Port Elizabeth

South Africa’s own “Windy City,” Port Elizabeth lies along the famous Garden Route, which you’ll discover on a tractor-drawn wagon ride (weather permitting).

4. Featherbed Nature Reserve

The crown jewel of the Garden Route, Featherbed Nature Reserve is accessible only by boat. On our tour, travelers enjoy a scenic 4-by-4 ride to the top of a promontory overlooking the ocean. You’ll be enchanted by the sights of these pristine forests and the sounds of waves crashing against the rocks far below.

5. Cape Town

Nestled between Table Mountain and the sea, you’ll find Cape Town, South Africa’s gateway to the world and one of the most multicultural cities on the continent.

6. Robben Island

Located tantalizingly close to the mainland, Robben Island was home to one of apartheid’s most notorious prisons. Nelson Mandela spent 28 years here as a political prisoner before leading South Africa into a brighter tomorrow.

7. Cape of Good Hope

Explorer Bartolomeu Dias originally named it the Cape of Tempests, but Portuguese King John II decided on the more optimistic name we know today. Home to exotic penguins and monkeys, the Cape of Good Hope symbolizes South Africa’s connection to the past and hope for the future.

It is my dream to travel to South Africa one day! I would love to see the white sharks up close and personal (in a cage) too.

I enjoyed Swaziland–with its female Chieftain, and Zululand, on the the PBS movie set.

This tour is great from start to finish. It has so many wonderful sights it is hard to pick just a few. The Township tour is not to be missed. You really learn something on this tour. It may be out of your comfort zone, but it will be an evening you will remember! Also the elephant ride. Be sure and get the DVD and the photos. I just got the DVD and now I wish I had purchased both.
