Cannes Film Festival officially kicks off today in the beautiful French Riviera. More than movie stars and red carpets, this international event puts foreign films front and center, letting us learn about other countries through their own art and entertainment.
The festival’s roots date back to the late 1930s, but it was formally founded in 1946. In its first official year as the “Festival du Film de Cannes,” sixteen countries were represented within the film selection. Today, as cinema’s most prestigious event, Cannes gets submissions from around the world, giving viewers (and fans back home) a truly global experience. This year, audiences can get glimpses of everywhere from Japan to Germany, Palestine to Thailand, all within the festival’s eleven days.
While the true standouts of the Cannes Film Festival are sure to rise to the top over the next week and a half, here are a few picks (and their around-the-world settings) to be on the look-out for now.
