For Chris Robinson, host of the Canadian radio program “Chris Robinson Travel Show,” adventuring isn’t just a hobby, it’s a passion. A passion that’s taken him to almost 150 different countries and led to a stint as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. It’s also one that he loves sharing with others over the airwaves. We recently caught up with Chris to talk radio, the tour of Ireland he’s organizing, and travel tips.
Go Ahead Tours: What does travel mean to you?
Chris Robinson: It’s about getting out there and getting to know a part of the world that you never would have otherwise. When you experience other cultures up close, it broadens your perspective of the world and allows you to see things from a point of view that’s different from your own. Travel truly broadens our horizons, and I love being able to share that with people.
GAT: Is that what inspired you to start your radio show?
CR: Yes, the radio show makes it so easy to connect with others versus showing them pictures of a destination on television. With radio, I can paint images with my words and let listeners imagine the places I’m talking about for themselves.
GAT: As someone who is so well-traveled, what made you choose Ireland for your tour?
CR: I’ve traveled throughout the southwest part of Ireland and visited Northern Ireland as well, so the west is the last piece of the puzzle for me. I’m excited to head down the Wild Atlantic Way, see the islands, and finally get up close to the Cliffs of Moher. Another thing about Ireland that keeps me coming back is the people, their warmth and hospitality are second to none—for the time that you’re there, it’s as if you’ve become an honorary Irish person.
GAT: When you go on trips like this, is there anything you won’t leave home without?
CR: This sounds like a no brainer, but I always make absolutely sure that I have my passport, ticket, and money before I head out the door. It’s important to have backups for each as well—a photocopy of your passport, a separate document with your ticket number, and a secret stash of cash. Noise-cancelling headphones are another one. These are essential for those times on long flights when you just want to shut out the rest of the world.
GAT: Anything else?
CR: Travel is both a joy and a privilege, and the best way to start any journey is with a smile. As I travel, a smile opens doors and experiences that I might miss otherwise. Never leave home without one!
GAT: Finally, any advice for people who are hesitant to book their first trip?
CR: As the saying goes, just do it! As a society, we’ve become much more timid over recent years, which I think is really unfortunate. When you travel and really get to know a new culture, your heart becomes more open and so do the hearts of the people you meet along the way.
Chris’ radio show airs on Zoomer Radio at 11am on Saturdays and Sundays as well as on CJAD 800 AM every Saturday at 11am. You can also listen live (and catch up on past episodes) here.
