In honor of Canada’s 150th birthday, we asked our travelers to the north to submit a photo of themselves showing off their Canadian pride on their travels for the chance to win a trip. Picking a favorite proved difficult since we had so many fun shots to sift through, but this one of travelers Greg and Amanda at Giant’s Causeway (below) ran away with the prize. We recently caught up with Amanda to chat travel and get the scoop about the story behind the winning picture, what it was like finding out her photo won, and where she and Greg are headed on their free trip.
How long have you and Greg been Go Ahead travelers?
We just booked our sixth tour, so I’d say right around ten years.
Sounds like you’ve been all over the place! Out of all the tours you’ve taken, which would you say has been your favorite?
Our first trip with Go Ahead was to Africa, on the Kenya and Tanzania tour and that’s one we’d do again in a heartbeat. We also just went on the Grand Tour of Ireland. I was born in Belfast and had only been back once before, so this trip was particularly meaningful to me. It’s also where we took the photo for the contest.
Speaking of the contest, how did you decide where in Ireland you wanted to take your photo?
We’d been to a couple of different places around the country taking pictures, but I thought Giant’s Causeway wound up being the best location out of them all—just because it was the number one place that all the people we asked told us we couldn’t miss. So, we took a couple of different shots there, each submitted one, and Greg’s was the one that wound up winning.
I have to ask, how did you guys come up with your pose?
It was a lot of fun actually. We got our flags out, changed into our red and white shirts, and pinned on our 150th buttons. Then, we asked one of the girls working at the Causeway if she would take the picture for us. When we told her what it was for, she got really excited and started giving us modeling advice, which I’m really glad we listened to.
Let’s talk about the moment you found out you won. What was your reaction when you got the phone call?
This is actually a pretty funny story. I’d been chatting with my Tour Consultant the day before, and when he phoned me the next day to follow up on our conversation he said “By the way, you won our contest for the free trip!” And my response was “Oh, thank you!” because I thought he was kidding me–we never win anything. I was so caught off guard that I didn’t fully process what he’d said. It wasn’t until we got the email later that night that I realized he was being perfectly serious!
Have you chosen a trip yet?
Yes! We’re doing the Highlights of the Baltics and adding five extra days in St. Petersburg after the tour.
That’s so exciting! What made you choose the Baltics?
We looked at a whole bunch of tours, but then our neighbors mentioned to us that they’d been to Russia and loved it. One of the people we like to travel with had also recommended that corner of the world, so we said “Ok, let’s do it!” And that was that! We also love history, especially the history of the Czars in Russia, so we’re really looking forward to the St. Petersburg part of the trip.
Where would you go if you won a free tour? Tell us in the comments.
