As we continue to celebrate our 50th anniversary as part of EF Education First, we thought it appropriate to dedicate one month to learning and those in our lives who have taught us new things. This month’s winner, Laura, was nominated by her husband due to the strength and positivity she exhibited throughout some difficult months.
– Jeff’s winning nomination
Laura spent last winter in a wheelchair due to a back injury and was diagnosed with breast cancer this past July. “That was a huge setback for me,” she says. “It’s a physical and an emotional battle, so it takes a while to process it and get past it. My goal now is to see myself ten years from now and say ‘what cancer’? I have the drive to move forward, to put it behind me.”
A mother of four and husband to Jeff, Laura says it’s due to them that she’s tried to stay optimistic about the future. “It’s hard on the people around you,” she says. “You have to be positive and surround yourself with positive people, because negativity doesn’t help anything.”
Laura’s upbeat attitude is what inspired Jeff to submit her name to our monthly free tour giveaway, describing her as having a determination to live and love every minute of life.
“My perspective has changed on a lot of things,” Laura reflects. “I think I enjoy everything more now, I just go with the flow.”
As you can imagine, Laura’s really looking forward to enjoying her free tour of Italy, a place she’s always wanted to visit. “We’ve been looking to plan a trip the last couple years; it’s been in the works and we’ve been trying to decide when a good time to go would be. One thing I’ve learned from all this is that there’s no time like the present.”
