For May, we wanted to celebrate all the great moms out there by having travelers nominate a mom who deserved to see the world. Our team was especially touched by one nominee, Jennifer, who had encouraged her daughter to see the world but hadn’t had a chance to see it for herself.
Read on for the winning nomination from Jennifer’s daughter and see where Jennifer is headed next!
How did you feel when you got the winning phone call?
Wow. It was just like, I was thinking to myself “is this really happening? Did Brenna really do that?” Just in shock that I won something like that and through my daughter writing something. I read what she wrote and it just brought tears to my eyes. It’s all sort of surreal!
Was your daughter excited by the win?
She actually came home from school and said “did you get a phone call?” She said I wanted to write in because you’ve always wanted to go to Ireland. It was so unexpected. We’re really going to do this because of her! She’s such a sweetheart.
Why did you encourage Brenna to travel? Why is it important?
I never really traveled when I was younger. Of course when I got married we went on a honeymoon to Mexico and then a couple years after that for our anniversary we went to Hawaii—I was pregnant with Brenna!—and we always said, “for our 10-year anniversary we’ll go to Alaska,” and then 20 years pass and life gets in the way, you don’t really make those plans for yourself. You’re doing it for your kids. And with her being young this is a great time for her to do that because it could get put off. You know, “we’ll wait ’til this, we’ll wait ’til then,” so especially when she’s young to go see new places and meet new people. She was doing the same thing like “maybe I should wait until I finish school,” but we were talking and it’s like, “you know, you should go for it!”
What are you most looking forward to seeing in Ireland?
For me, the landscape, the architecture, all the old buildings and seascapes. It’s just so beautiful, what I’ve seen in pictures. And learning more about my husband’s side of the family, just to get that whole background. Plus, I love cold weather and I hear it’s very cold there! It’s just going to be beautiful. It’s like this dream that’s always been there but you don’t know if it’s attainable. Now all of a sudden it is!
