Tour Consultant Rose C. recently returned from the Grand Tour of Italy, which begins in Lake Como and extends down the length of Italy before making a final stop in Rome. Here, she shares five of her favorite moments on tour.
Lake Como was the perfect place to start off our tour. Upon arrival, I had some time to grab a slice of pizza from a local bakery and walk along the water—finally finding a wooden bench with this view. Everyone seemed to be on holiday or taking the weekend off; The locals all seemed so relaxed.
As we walked toward the Duomo in Florence, I felt as though I was being transported back to the Renaissance era. I felt completely in awe when staring up at the massive pink, white and green structure towering over me. After our guided sightseeing tour, our Tour Director took us to a local osteria where we lunched on authentic Florentine steak while overlooking sights and sounds of the city.
After walking along the River Adige in Verona, our group strolled along the cobblestone streets to Casa di Giulietta—home of Shakespeare’s Juliet. There is a wrought-iron wall framed by wild ivy where visitors attach engraved locks with their partner’s name to forever “lock in” their love.
From the moment you step foot in Venice, you can sense the historical significance of this one-time maritime empire. Passing St. Mark’s Square, you are transported through tiny alleyways and winding waterways into the heart of the city.
Driving through Naples and into Sorrento featured some of the most beautiful views I have experienced. Our Tour Director scheduled a quick photo stop where we could look down at colorful resorts and houses perched on a waterfront cliff. Because the sky was so clear that evening, we were able to see the Island of Capri off in the distance.
