No matter how many great experiences are packed into your tour, every trip seems to have that one magical day that tops all the rest. Here, Marketing Manager Katie G. recounts her visit with the Masai Mara tribe.
Meeting the masai in Kenya was such an unforgettable experience. I loved getting to dance and sing with them and learn all about their way of life. It was especially interesting to learn about the importance of the cow to their culture. They don’t eat the cow’s but a man’s wealth is determined by how many cows he has—and the whole tribe lives in huts made out of cow dung.
It was also interesting to learn that a man’s attractiveness is dictated by how high he can jump—the higher he jumps the more girlfriends he has! Each woman gives her boyfriends a piece of jewelry to show they are in a relationship, so it’s easy to spot the most popular guys!
The masai are special because they have been able to keep their traditions alive and stay true to their heritage in a time when so many other tribes have started to embrace modern technology and change. Still, they are so friendly and open to visitors—meeting them was truly the experience of a lifetime.
