It takes input from a lot of people to get a new tour off the ground—from dreaming up an itinerary to scouting the best accommodations and finding the perfect Tour Director to bring the destination to life. But when it comes to having a finger on the pulse of the whole process, we count on Product Development Manager Lael K. Here, he answers a few questions about our new Grand Tour of France.
We already have a few tours to France—what’s the reason for launching a Grand Tour there?
Who doesn’t love France? It’s the most-visited country in the world, and Paris is its most-visited city. Grand Tours are great for people who want a deeper experience of one country—our Grand Tours of Italy, Spain and elsewhere in Europe have been traveler favorites.
What makes it different from our other France tours?
It’s a truly comprehensive look at the country. This tour includes a great balance of iconic sites, large cities, small cities and quaint villages. Some new destinations that we don’t visit on other tours include the world-famous city of Bordeaux, the Atlantic port city of La Rochelle and the charming “Pink City” of Toulouse (nicknamed for its prevalent brick architecture).
What do you think are the highlights of the tour?
So many! Lyon’s delectable cuisine, the rocky French Riviera coast near Nice, the extravagance of Monte Carlo, Bordeaux’s world-renowned wines, the chateaux of the Loire Valley, Normandy’s Mont Saint-Michel and the D-Day Beaches, the Palace of Versailles… and of course, there’s always Paris.
What was your favorite part of putting the itinerary together?
Researching the lesser known destinations in France such as Pérouges outside of Lyon, La Rochelle, Toulouse and Montpellier. It was also fascinating to gain a deeper understanding of the diversity of the regions in terms of food, history, landscape, culture and sights. Each part of France has so much to offer and it’s a country you can keep visiting time after time and still not see it all.
