I happened to be in Rome during Easter weekend a few years ago and got the opportunity to attend some of the ceremonies at the Vatican. I went to St. Peter’s Square on Saturday evening to watch the sun set and attend mass. I had visited during the day when it was filled with sunlight, but with the candle-lit setting, busy crowds and the Pope standing under Bernini’s famous altar, St. Peter’s Basilica took on a whole new ambiance. On Easter Sunday, people flooded St. Peter’s Square to listen to the pope speak. I heard countless languages that day, and even though it was cold and rainy, the crowd was so excited to be there. It was a really memorable cultural moment.
