One of the major holidays in China, Chinese New Year celebrates the arrival of the lunar new year. The happy occasion is often marked by costumes, gift giving and, of course, plenty of food. Here, some of the symbolic foods you’ll find at a typical Chinese New Year celebration.
These comfort-food favorites are a staple at family reunions and can be found on almost every plate during the New Year. Some traditions encourage hiding a coin in one of the dumplings, granting the finder luck for the rest of the year.
Fish represents prosperity and holds a significant amount of importance in the Chinese New Year. After a fish dinner, leftovers are saved for the following morning to signify that prosperity will overflow.’
When it comes to noodles, longer is better. Don’t cut your noodles if you can help it—extra-long strands promise extra longevity for the eater.
Tangerines and oranges
Whether they’re being displayed or eaten, oranges are thought to bring good luck. This tradition stems from the Chinese word for “orange,” which sounds like the word for “gold.”
