Staggering peaks, glowing lava and smoldering craters—it’s no wonder that thrill seekers are drawn to volcanoes. Whether it’s zip-lining next to active peaks or simply taking in the specular view from afar, volcano tourism is a growing travel trend. While we’re not advocating scaling an erupting volcano, we definitely admire the wonders of Mother Nature, both active and dormant.
One traveler favorite can be found in Costa Rica‘s Arenal National Park, home to the country’s most active volcano. Marvel at the smoking conical peak from across scenic Lake Arenal, hike through the nearby national park or relax in the local hot springs, which are kept warm by the same geothermal energy that created Arenal.
